The Question Nobody Has Answered: Does a Preparation Differ From the Plant?

Every published analysis of Blue Lotus examined raw plant material: fresh organs, dried petals, or commercial extract. None examined a fermented wine, an extended infusion or a spagyric elixir. This article sets out that gap, and states clearly that an unmeasured question has no known answer in either direction.

What each study actually measured

What material has been analysed? Poklis and colleagues in 2017 analysed retail products including vape resin. Dosoky and colleagues in 2023 analysed concretes and absolutes produced by hexane followed by ethanol. Younis, Mohsen and colleagues in 2025 analysed fresh flower, leaf and stem. All are raw or industrially extracted material.

Line the studies up by what physically went into the instrument and a pattern appears immediately.

The 2017 forensic work examined retail powder and resin, including a confiscated vape product. The 2023 analysis examined authentic extracts produced with hexane and then ethanol, industrial solvents chosen for analytical work. The 2025 Cairo study, the most rigorous of them, examined the plant itself, its flower, leaf and stem, separately.

Not one examined something a person had made in the way people have historically made things from this flower.

No wine steeped with petals. No infusion left for weeks. No spagyric preparation with its separation, calcination and recombination. Nothing fermented, nothing aged, nothing that underwent the kind of slow transformation that traditional preparation actually involves.

That is not a criticism of any of those teams. They were answering the questions they set out to answer, and answering them well. It is simply an observation about what the literature does not yet contain.

Why processing changes what you recover

Does preparation method change plant chemistry? Yes, as a general principle of plant chemistry. Which compounds are recovered from plant material depends on solvent polarity, extraction time, temperature and pH. Fermentation additionally introduces microbial metabolism, which can transform compounds into different ones.

This part is well established and is not a claim about Blue Lotus specifically.

Different solvents recover different compound classes. Water pulls out polar constituents, alcohol reaches a broader range, non-polar solvents like hexane recover fats and waxes and leave much else behind. A preparation made with one will not have the same profile as one made with another.

Time matters. A brief extraction and a six week maceration do not produce the same result from the same material.

Temperature matters, and heat can destroy some compounds while making others more available.

And fermentation is a different order of change altogether, because living organisms are metabolising the material and producing compounds that were not present at the start.

So the profile of a fresh flower is not automatically the profile of something made from that flower over weeks. That is ordinary plant chemistry.

A reasonable inference. That these general principles apply to Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea specifically is an inference from how plant material behaves generally, not a demonstrated finding for this species. Nobody has run the comparison. The principle is sound. Its application here is untested.

The caveat the authors raised themselves

There is one place where a research team said this out loud about their own work, and it deserves quoting because it came from them rather than from me.

Dosoky and colleagues, whose 2023 analysis is available open access, found their authentic extracts free of apomorphine and containing only trace nuciferine. Then they wrote, in the paper, that the extraction conditions used, hexane followed by ethanol, "were not optimal for their extraction."

The authors flagged that their method may not have been well suited to recovering the very compounds they were reporting on.

That is scientific practice working properly, and it is also a direct statement that method affects result. If a change of laboratory solvent can matter that much, a change from laboratory solvent to fermented wine is not a trivial difference.

It does not tell us what a traditional preparation contains. It tells us the question is real.

Wine, and what the Egyptian record points at

There is a reason wine keeps coming up, and it is worth stating carefully because it is easy to overclaim.

In Egyptian banqueting and temple imagery, the flower appears repeatedly alongside wine vessels and unguents. That co-occurrence is a strong and often noted pattern. It is not a recipe, and no surviving text sets out a preparation naming her, a limit I have set out fully in the article on the evidence for her ritual use.

But the pattern does point somewhere specific. If the historical practice involved wine, then the historical preparation was fermented and alcoholic, and every modern analysis has examined something else entirely.

Which means the chemistry of the thing the Egyptians may actually have made has never been measured by anyone, because nobody has made it and measured it.

What would actually answer this

The study is not complicated to describe, which is part of why its absence is striking.

Take botanically authenticated material of the correct variety. Divide it. Analyse one portion raw, by the same high-resolution methods used in 2025. Prepare the remainder by traditional routes, a fermented wine, an extended alcoholic maceration, a full spagyric process. Analyse those. Compare.

One species, one source, several preparations, the same instrument throughout.

That would settle in a single piece of work whether preparation meaningfully changes this plant's chemistry, and it would do so in either direction. A null result would be just as useful, and would close a question that currently lets everyone speculate.
